Why cast iron and galvanized fail in these homes

The two original materials in a 1930s Kilgore cottage age in opposite directions but both end the same way. Cast-iron drains corrode from the inside; the pipe scales up, the channel narrows, waste catches on the rough interior, and eventually the bottom of the pipe rusts through or a section cracks. Galvanized supply lines rust closed instead of open — the zinc coating wears away, the steel corrodes inward, pressure drops, and rust colors the water. Neither can be patched back to health once it is failing across the run; a repair on one section just moves the next failure a few feet down the line.
